: In case of unsymmetrical ethers having two different alkyl groups, the alcohol and the alkyl halide formed, depend on the nature of the alkyl groups. If primary and secondary alkyl groups are present, the reaction occurs by 
mechanism and because of steric hindrance, the halide ion attacks the smaller alkyl group and hence the alkyl halide is always formed from the smaller alkyl group.
